Horsecombe Brow

A large extension to a mid-20th century semi-detached house

The brief was to extend a mid-20th century semi-detached house to provide a generous and flexible living/dining/kitchen space that gave seamless access to the garden.

We opted for a flat-roofed extension to give generous floor-to-ceiling heights. As the garden was north facing, we could introduce large areas of glazing without the risk of the family room overheating in summer. The final design provides:

  • A generous family room with open plan kitchen, living/play space and dining table

  • Seamless access to the garden

  • A huge utility with plenty of storage; allowing the kitchen to be kept clean

  • Access from the front drive to the back garden via the garage (for muddy boots and bikes)

  • A warm home in winter and cool in summer
